Building a Modern Management System for Health, Security and the Environment

Each employee of Sonangol should feel responsible and committed to ensuring health and safety in the workplace as well as caring for the environment.

Sonangol's philosophy is that high standards in the areas of health, security and the environment are an essential part of our business as a petroleum and operator company, as well as being integral part of the Angolan community.

We believe in the prevention of both workplace accidents and of environmental damage through effective management. In all our operational areas, we place great emphasis on:

  • Prevention of workplace accidents, pollution and damage to the environment.
  • Implementation of workplace health and safety regulations for all workers.

The implementation of this particular policy and the adoption of policies and procedures appropriate to the operational demands of the company is the responsibility of the Administration Council.

Sonangol will ensure that all relevant laws and regulations concerning health, security and the environment will be followed.

In order to effectively implement these policies, Sonangol will continuously improve the operational activities of the company and will contribute towards the regulations and standards of health, security and environmental regulations within the petroleum industry. This will be accomplished through the exchange of information, publication of Sonangol's policies and practices and the adoption of international standards.

This policy is also applicable to Sonangol's operations and other business interests.

QHSE Program

Sonangol is proud of the fact that it has had neither a serious accident nor oil spill.

To keep it that way, the company planned a major investment in a QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment) program to ensure safety standards across all segments of activities.

The guidelines for implementation of QHSE were defined and published in 2002.

Also in 2002, the company allocated 2 million dollars and 2,000 employees for the implementation of the program across both production units and exploration sites as well as in areas such as transportation and distribution.

The QHSE program will take Sonangol's current standards a step further to ensure safe, clean and environmentally friendly working procedures for its employees as well as for Angola as a whole.

Sonangol recognizes that it is the responsibility of the administration to ensure that all required areas adhere to the expectations set forth in this policy and that third-party providers also commit themselves to providing comparable service.

Health, security and environmental policies and supporting policies will be revised whenever the operational development of the company requires said development.
